An earlier model was created in [[2834]]. It is visually similar to a scorpion, complete with a "tail" rising up from the rear of the BattleMech. The claw-like elements near the cockpit are actually armored guards, placed on either side of the head to keep ground troops from sniping at the cockpit. Scientists who designed it apparently believed in a quantity over quality approach, as the ''Fire Scorpion'' is rugged, cheap and primarily fielded by second-line forces that defend cities, the role in which it excels. During the absorption of [[Clan Widowmaker]] on [[Roche]], the ''Fire Scorpion'' developed a reputation as a resilient and deadly urban fighter. Goliath Scorpions usually deploy the ’Mech alongside Elemental forces, allowing its combination of heavy armor and sustainable firepower to facilitate infantry operations in close quarters. The limited flexibility of the design is due partly to its slow speed, partly its lack of maneuverability-enhancing [[jump jet]]s, and partly because of its ammunition-dependent weaponry. To counter these flaws, the ''Fire Scorpion'' makes use of a staggering fourteen tons of armor and almost a tenth of its mass in ammunition.
