From the back cover

As the Khans of the Clans gather on Strana Mechty to plan a new invasion of the Inner Sphere, Jade Falcon Khan Marthe Pryde strives to rebuild her Clan to its former glory. She bloods new warriors and wins others in Trials from other Clans, but she cannot waste any fine warrior—even those who are freeborn. She gives a Trinary composed entirely of freeborns to a freeborn Star Captain and allows Diana, the freeborn daughter of a Jade Falcon hero, to compete for a bloodname.

The Khans of the Steel Vipers—long-standing rivals of the Falcons—use these radical moves against Marthe, attacking her in the Grand Council. In the midst of this war of intimidation, the Inner Sphere accomplishes the unthinkable—an invasion of Clan space. But even that cannot stop Marthe Pryde or the Steel Vipers as their ripening conflict explodes into war...

Summary

In 3060 warrior Diana, the freeborn daughter of Peri Watson and Aidan Pryde, chooses to compete for the Pryde bloodname. She is coached by Star Commander Joanna and trains with Star Captain Horse. Her attempt infuriates the trueborn population of Clan Jade Falcon. She wins the bloodname. Later in 3061, Khan Marthe Pryde launches an attack on Waldorff V. Diana Pryde defeats Steel Viper Khan Perigard Zalman and, along with Horse, saves Joanna's life. Joanna becomes a sibparent for Sibko Training Center 111.

The Bloodname Trial final battle took place in an underground cavern between Diana in a Nova A modified to remove the Anti missile system and replace it with a probe and a jammer, and a Mad Dog. This victory was slightly bittersweet in that the final opponent had been cordial with Diana all througout the Bloodname competition. This warrior died when the Mad Dog fell in the fiery oil waters of the Cave.

In response to the prominence of the Diana Pryde blood name competition, Clan steel viper planned to tarnish the falcons via a series of provocations and challenges. A major moment in this was a challenge made by Perigard Zolman to Marthe Pryde. Each chose a Champion, and to spite the Steel Vipers, Mechwarrior Horse was selected. This battle was fought on Strana Mechty, but ended with the steel viper mech toppling on some civilians. This enraged horse, who dismounted his mech, and beat the steel viper

The problems with the steel vipers later turned into an invasion of the Jade Falcon Occupation zone, and a counter invasion by the Jade Falcons. This culminated with the conquest of Waldorf. This had 3 major showdowns. Khan Marthe Pryde fought former Steel Viper Khan Natalie Breen, who lost the battle of Tukkayid. These two fought a challenge for a sedctor of waldor fought between a Summoner and a Crossbow.

Mechwarrior Horse was challenged by the Viper who lost the previous challenge to him, and the two found a quiet place to go a second round, once again fought between a summoner and stormcrow.

Finally, Perigard Zolman and a binary fought a battle agains a collection of Falcons initially including Ravil Pryde, Diana Pryd, Horse, Pegeen and one other. This battle culminated in Diana Prydes Nova standing over Ravil prydes downed Timberwolf taking on the final 6 Vipers, downing 3. The final crossbow of which was likely Khan Zulman, whos loss started the final retreat of the steel vipers.

The other major plotline of this novel follow Scientist Peri (Diana's mother) who is once again spying on the scientest caste for the Khan. She has found an illicit mechwarrior training facility, with Pryde bloodline sibkos. She is initially beaten down by thugs sent by the scientist general to keep the facility a secret. Later, when she survives, she is able to get assigned to the facility, and continues to try and uncover the secret plans of the scientist general.
