Description[edit]
Unlike more sophisticated autonomous robotic drones, a Remote Drone Operating System requires human control of the unit which equips it. This remote control system has a limited range on planetary surfaces of about 80km (unless supplemented by satellites), while aerospace-based control systems have a range of 3,000,000km. A unit mounting the Remote Drone Operating System must be paired with a controller console such as the CCS (Remote) which will provide the controlled unit with guidance.
If the drone exceeds the control range, or if hostile ECM interferes with the signal, the controlled drone becomes immobile and inactive.
The mass of the system is 10% of the equipped unit's mass, plus 0.5 tons for additional communications equipment. Remote Drones incur additional penalties on piloting checks and indirect fire, spotting, and fire while spotting.
